Giant loss one 'tough day' - 2004-02-12
For 19 NFL seasons, football was a breeze for Trey Junkin. He toiled in anonymity while earning the respect of special teams colleagues and coaches, flawlessly tossing footballs through his legs, on target and on time with enough dependability to make FedEx jealous.

That all turned upside down for the venerable long-snapper one dreadful day during the 2002 NFC wild-card game. Junkin had been lured off his couch and out of retirement to help save the New York Giants' dreadful special teams, traumatized all season by wayward snaps.

NFL may be fighting losing battle - 2004-02-12
As was expected, the NFL has gone to court to appeal the New York federal court ruling in the Maurice Clarett case.

Last week, Judge Shira Scheindlin ruled that the Ohio State running back was eligible for this year's NFL draft, knocking down league rules limiting the draft to players who have been out of high school for at least three college seasons.

Yesterday, she turned down the NFL's request that she delay implementation of her order, pending the outcome of the appeal. The league's prospects for winning before a higher court seem less than certain.
